Panchakarma Therapy

Our physical, mental and emotional environments have changed dramatically in the past few decades. The introduction of new synthetic chemicals is only one of the examples of recently invented outside influences. These outside influences have multiple side-effects on the human body. And when combined with the fast-paced lifestyle, they have created an extraordinary burden on the body.

The human being is an evolving organism, but it does not have the capacity to adequately adapt to maintain health in these radical environmental changes.

Panchakarma offers a counter to these challenges. It can prove to be an invaluable aid in keeping us strong, vital and healthy. It presents a systemic treatment for cleansing and balancing the doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha)  in the body. The panchakarma is made of two words- ‘Panch’ and ‘Karma’. Panch means five and karma mean Procedure. They together mean Five Procedures’. Panchakarma is done to detoxify the body and maintain the three doshas.

The five procedures are:

  • Vamana (Emesis)
  • Virechana (Purgation)
  • Basti (Medicated Enemas)
  • Nasya (Nasal Drops)
  • Raktamokshana (Bloodletting)

  • Vaman (Emesis): It involves the medicated vomiting using a decoction of different herbs like liquorice, salt and calamus. It is usually specified for people with ‘Kapha’ disorders.
  • Virechan (Purgation): Purgative is provided to the patient. Purgative is given to eliminate the toxins from the body. The toxins are removed in such a way that the electrolyte balance is maintained in the body. It is typically used to remove high Pitta (fire) from its site in the small intestines.
  • Basti (Medicated Enemas): Enemas are mainly used to dismiss high Vata (air) from the body. It can be explained as an Enema.
  • Nasya (Nasal Administration): Medicinal oils or herbal mixtures (mixed with oils or ghee)  are breathed in by the patient. Drops can also be transferred into the nose. This results in stimulation of the nerve endings of nasal cavities resulting in better blood circulation in the sinuses. It is also good for balancing the ‘PRANA VATA’.
  • Raktamokshana (Bloodletting): Raktamokshan is bloodletting therapy. It is used for purification of blood. it is used to remove vitiated pitta dosha from the blood, which is responsible for bloodborne diseases. Bloodletting can be done using various methods e.g. applying leeches. It is used in the treatment of psoriasis, indralupta- androgenic baldness, varicosities-varicose veins, vaatrakat-gout.
